Why are 70% of adults in the English speaking word overweight or obese?

Because sometime around 1850 we summoned a weak superintelligence to feed us all. By about 1950 this super-powerful system was feeding almost everyone.

But... it kept getting more powerful.
By around 1980 the food system had worked out how to hack humans and make them eat to the point where they killed themselves.

It had spend hundreds of billions of dollars employing many different professionals to perfect the hacks; tastes, textures, colors, nutrients, ads ...
The enemy - the Food Optimizer - is everywhere.
What can you do if The Food Optimizer has hacked you?

It's well-known within the relevant academic circles that The Food Optimizer and its hacks are almost impossible for most humans to resist.
Professional academics who study obesity have admitted defeat (for now); most people who are fat will not permanently lose weight, they'll at best lose it temporarily and then get hacked by an unholy alliance between The Food Optimizer and their own subconscious brain.
If you are fat (BMI > 40) and think you have the willpower to resist The Food Optimizer, then try (right now) to voluntarily hold your breath in until you faint. This exercise will disabuse you of any notion that you have the willpower to do so. https://twitter.com/RokoMijicUK/status/1338544316596285444
If you are still with me and have BMI > 50, you should get gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery will make it much harder for The Food Optimizer's hacks to work on you. But it might kill you. 😳
If your BMI is 25-40 then you have a problem. You are an ideal victim for The Food Optimizer, but not fat enough for surgery. That's exactly the group I'm in (BMI 34).
You are merely a little individual running on corrupted hardware, your enemy is a world-spanning super-powerful optimizer that has social permission to be absolutely everywhere. And the enemy has all your zero day exploits.
If you're going to beat this powerful enemy who can hack your mind, you're going to have to use more powerful weapons than mere willpower (it can hack that).

I'll finish this thread when my own BMI is below 30.

It's not true that people who "really want" to lose weight have already done so.

A bunch of people went on a US show called The Biggest Loser and then they almost all regained it.

Some people continue to claim that obesity is due to a lack of willpower, but the trend over time is hard to explain.

Are people losing willpower over time?
And if people are just weak-willed nowadays but strong willed in the past, how do you explain the relatively constant consumption of alcohol since 1860 (and far less spirits!):
In the past, people still engaged in drink, drugs and prostitution, but they were mostly thin.

What changed?

We invented The Food Optimizer.
