Selena Gomez’s impact in the pop music industry.
A NECESSARY THREAD- PUT SOME RESPECT ON HER NAME.
Disclaimer: don’t put it on the singing. This thread is not about live performances, nor about Selena’s singing technique. It’s about the hits Selena has had in these years.
Also, all the artists that will be mentioned are talented and brilliant to me.
In 2016 Britney Spears released her 9th studio album: “Glory”.
While promoting it in several radios, the princess of pop deliberately confirmed that she was inspired by Selena Gomez and her album “Revival”.
Critics have defined Selena’s style as “whisper pop”, which consists in singing with a breathy/ husky tone. This has become her brand in the music industry. Janet Jackson invented this, Britney Spears was also inspired by Janet for years but in 2015 with GFY Selena revived it.
Selena has so many hits with this breathy style in her catalogue. This means she has impact:her music is popular and other singers ofc listen to her stuff and get inspired. If it wasn’t for the noise she made other artists that today base their singing on whisper wouldn’t exist
Bad Liar is one of Selena’s best songs ever, which is also the most critically acclaimed song of 2017, and it has had a lot of impact.
To start with an example , let’s mention “Nervous” by Shawn Mendes.
After Bad Liar came out, there were many artists that were clearly influenced by the song.
The amazing kpop artist Suzy sampled the same song Selena chose to use for her jam “Bad Liar” and apparently was also inspired by her breathy tone in the song.
Selena also created a new concept for MVs. In fact, when she announced the premiere of her Bad Liar MV she had a movie artwork created and she also played 4 different characters. Other pop stars have followed this trend, like Camila Cabello.
Let’s move on. In 2017 Selena reached her peak with her droplets era. Everyone wanted a Selena Gomez feature. She got to collab with: Marshmello, KYGO, Cashmere Cat, Dj Snake and we could’ve had even more if Selena didn’t have to struggle in her private life.
She introduced the concept of “droplet era”. Which is basically about putting out different singles that don’t belong to a whole body of work (album) but they’re independent singles.
Other artists like Katy Perry have followed the trend (Never Really Over, Small Talk, HIH)
Last year Selena released her highly anticipated album “Rare”. An album that has been trashed by her own fans in the first place for underperforming. But I find it stupid since it’s been released in the middle of a pandemic.
The lyrics of the album are all uplifting, about resilience, strength, growth, pain, breakup, love, escapism. All themes that make a whole body of work that’s been highly influential. How?
Let’s dive in
October 2019: Selena released her no.1 single “Lose you to love me”. A single that did that in pop culture: a song about her past relationship and pain. But it’s also triumphant for its vibe. And, most importantly, sonically it’s a piano ballad.
Why is this relevant? Because releasing a piano ballad in 2019 as a lead single is not something everyone would’ve done. She risked A LOT: piano ballads all flop (in such a industry where trap pop is the best selling genre) unless you are Adele, or apparently, Selena Gomez!!
After Lose you to love me was dropped many other pop stars released piano ballads. Here’s examples (that I love so much):
Like mentioned before, the lyrics of Selena’s last album are very uplifting. And you may find this kind of lyricism also on Lady Gaga’s “Chromatica” and Katy Perry’s “Smile”, both pop stars may have been inspired by Selena’s way to tell stories in her songs, since Rare was out be4
end of the thread: again, I don’t want anyone to feel attacked by this thread. Absolutely not, that’s not my intention at all. Please be kind in giving your different opinion❤️
