Have had a lot of opportunity to reflect on what it means to take active action for DEI. It means always being *that* voice in the room, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you. But this week I was rewarded with two positive outcomes. Gather 'round my friends.
Case in point 1. In a panel of awards, X grants received a score of ( let's say a made up #)1.5. X+4 grants received a (made up) score of 1.75. X grants were male applicants only; 3 of the X+4 grants were female. With the data to support the fact that female grants are more..
..harshly graded than male, I argued we should discuss all of the top 11, rather than the suggested top 7. And when the discussion was done, 2 of the 3 female grants moved well up the ladder, and 1 was even awarded! Supporting the premise that unconscious bias exists (surprise!).
Case in point 2. Was asked to speak on a panel for #DiversityandInclusion on racism. I said, as I always do, I don't want to take space away from Black/ Latin voices. If you have plenty of those voices on your panel, I will gladly speak. If not, here are some Black colleagues.
Answer: We checked and have none. Thanks for your input, we will invite your colleagues.
This is how we do it, a chip at a time. But it is exhausting- so the more of us who do it the better.
I don't post this to pat my back, but I'm not gonna lie, I was super proud of #1

I post it so those of you out there invited to do these things, consider the data behind grant scores, and making space for those voices that might be better off speaking these truths, in the instances where that is possible (it isn't always).
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!

Also apologies to colleagues like @bradylabupenn whose name I freely hand out
I know she still loves me though! And *some* of these things do come with honoraria so hopefully those of you Iâm flinging into fray are at least getting paid for it!
