I will give a longish reply, at the risk of being trolled mercilessly... We have fetishized both the people and the land of Uttarakhand. We seem to be okay with bars, pubs, movie theatres, and so on in every single part of India.
But, as soon as someone so much so even dares to https://twitter.com/alok_bhatt/status/1338535988121878528
Talk of Uttarakhand in that vein, it is deemed as being too controversial.
Kyun bhai? Pahadon par manushya nahi rehte kya?? Aapko samtal mein daaru peena hai, toh pahad mein kaunse keval saadhu janme hain?
Avg Delhi waala (and you can count me in that) wants one
Metro station for his bathroom and another for his bedroom. But, dare we folks living in mountains ask for roads, rails, airports? No! Ecology, economy, national security, every imaginable excuse in the universe is plonked upon us
A few years ago, @alok_bhatt bhaiyya had an admittedly radical opinion about mountains. Excoriated to the degree of getting his family involved.
There is NOTHING here. My family does not want to move to even a large-ish city in the mountains, despite my repeated requests?
I shit you not. Asked my father why it was so. He said there is nothing there (and this is a man who does not drink or smoke). What about youngsters?
Stop, for heaven's sake, this fetishization of the mountains (a process that's older than we imagine). Humans, with dreams, aspirations, desires and abilities live here too.
Jawani aur Paani, as @narendramodi ji says. Dono ko pahaadon ke kaam aane do
We need, from every sense and angle imaginable, more tourism, industry, infrastructure, economic investment, healthcare and educational institutions in the mountains.
Anyone with their derrieres parked in Delhi or Dubai should quit the pontificating; and let the folks of
these mountains decide this on their own.
(By mountains I mean nothing lower than Champawat in Kumaon. Do not come here talking about Haldwani, gaali padegi paanch bhaashaaon mein)
And, to answer @alok_bhatt bhaiyya's original question: Yes, we need more sources of entertainment, travel, tourism and just sources of distraction. You want to come here and be "lost in the mountains"? Be my guest (figuratively). Sabko meditation ka shauk nahi hai
