The Arsenal rebuild is not an easy one. It is a process- a long and tedious one , especially if you don't have the finances of City/PSG.The start that Arteta had is the reason for the furore today.
He took a squad woefully, unbalanced and inept and gained massive results- which force many to ignore the realities. Arteta is a superb manager. One of the best in the business currently- just listen to the praises from his players, rivals and fellow pros in the game.
Not many can get what he got from these useless players. This is not to say he hasn't made mistakes, everyone in this business does. But his approach to many things have been spot on- the results will be seen over- time.
The squad is on its knees, and it will take a long time to overhaul and mobilize- the signs in the last window were positive towards this direction. Three top quality signings- Partey, Gabriel & Willian (1 many don’t agree with).
Just to note, no club except city can sign two ‘tier 1’ players for every position, it's just not feasible- financially and for team spirit and squad morale. So it's important to get players who can do a job for you, until you can fully overhaul things- Willian is such a player.
He is a great transitional threat, who offers excellent technical security & offers pressing capabilities from the front. However, he needs help- Arsenal have a dead right side.
Arteta has a plan of action for the long haul, but he is aware that in the short term he needs to create that balance which will enable him to get results- but is equally aware that there will be bad periods, because the group is an unbalanced and inept one.
Liverpool is the bench-mark & Klopp one of the best in world football showed a way of how to complete a rebuild. Klopp completed it, & now Liverpool are European, PL, Club World champions. Arguably one of the best teams in club football history.
Take a look at some of the players from the team he inherited in 2015, included: Mingolet, Sakho,Skrtel,Clyne,Moreno,Milner,Lucas,Can,Origi,Lallana,Countinho. Divock Origi, and James Milner are still at the club. It's only the two who play any role though for them today.
Compare that squad with the current Livpool squad- stark contrast .So a few years of a clear vision & backing the manager can get you there. It's important to note that on his way to overhauling the squad,he bought & kept some players who were not a part of the long term project
But players who could do a job when needed. It is the same for Arsenal today, not because a player plays now, means they are a part of the long term project-its a process. A process that if done correctly, will be successful over a few years.
From the squad that Arteta currently have, I can see only Tierney, Partey, Saka, Gabriel, Martinelli, ESR being a part of a long term project. But overhauling a squad as such with the Boardroom behind the team will take 3-4 windows.
Becoz of that, the following can be considered to do a job until they can be fully replaced with top quality options:Auba,Willian, Mari, Leno, Reis, El Neny, Nketiah, Holding, Willock. The others must be shipped, & shipped within the next 2 windows (Winter+Summer).
There is a lot of deadwood taking up huge salaries, & it will prove difficult to sell these players because they have no value, so the clear-out is difficult. The ending of some contracts will be significant in this regard.
It will help to fast track this process, although the last window was it not for covid19 would accelerate the departure of many of them.
One thing about Liverpool is they have a sporting director in Michael Edwards. He is the man behind their signings, most of whom have been hits. So Klopp is assisted in the market.
IMO Edu should be given until June to see if he really can support the manager's vision, if not he must be removed- signs are though he may have an eye for the required players, but he must move with more alacrity and forcefulness in the market.
The recruitment needs to be smart, and consistent, and correct. The vision must contain a few big name signings- in key areas. While the others must simply be good enough, good spots, well coached and fits the way Arteta wants to play.
In concluding, I believed it was an inspired decision by Arsenal to hire Arteta, albeit it should have been immediately to succeed wenger. He is already an excellent manager, and has all the tools in his armoury to be a riveting success, and amongst the top 5 in the world.
Changing 3 managers in under 4 years is not the answer, obviously, the players & the structure of the club needed changing. Arteta has changed & continues to renew the culture. He is also changing the personnel as we speak- this will be an ongoing process over 3-4 windows.
In this process, you will have bad results, disgruntled players, and supporters, but now is the time to bite the bullet, see out the process & reap the rewards of the overhaul.
