With the new year approaching, its time to talk about setting SMARTer goals.
Goals need to be:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Timely
In this THREAD, I'll go over how to properly set goals.

Goals need to be:

In this THREAD, I'll go over how to properly set goals.
Let's go

1. Specific
Set goals that are well defined.
State what you will do.
Use action words like "I will".
Instead of saying: "I want to lose weight."
Set a more specific goal like:
"I will lose 20 pounds."

2. Measurable
Set trackable goals.
Provide a way to evaluate your progress.
Use metrics or data targets.
For example, you can measure the amount of weight you lose every week using a scale.
Or, you can track the macronutrients in your diet using MyFitnessPal.

3. Achievable
Set goals within your scope.
Make sure your goals are possible to accomplish given your availability of:
- Knowledge
- Resources
- Time
How likely are you to accomplish this goal?
If you're 4'11" & your goal is to dunk a basketball, you should reconsider.

4. Relevant
Make sure your goals are important to you.
If you aren't concerned with losing weight, then a goal to lose 20 lbs will feel like more of a drag than an enjoyable journey.
What do you genuinely want?
Will this goal help you level up in other areas of your life?

5. Timely
Set a deadline for your goals.
With a deadline, every day counts & you have no room to slack off.
Make sure your deadlines are long enough to achieve the goal, but short enough to really challenge you.

Examples of SMART goals:
"I will lose 20 pounds in 3 months."
"I will start a side hustle & make $1,000 in 3 months."
"I will invest 20% of my paychecks every month, as soon as I get paid."
"I will volunteer once per week at my local animal shelter."

Now that you know how to set SMART goals, its time to break your goals down into 2 time frames:
- Short-term
- Long-term
Short-term goals should be achievable within a year.
Long-term goals should be achievable within 3 or more years.
I prefer to set my long-term goals first.

Long-term goals should be achievable within 3 or more years.
I prefer to set my long-term goals first.
I set long-term goals first, because I see short term goals as stepping stones to get me to my long-term goals.
Example:
- Short-term goal
"Save $500/month in high-yield savings account."
- Long-term goal
"Save enough for a downpayment on a
."
Example:
- Short-term goal

- Long-term goal

When setting both short & long-term goals, don't forget to maintain the SMART principles.
Your goals should always be changing.
As you achieve them, cross them out & set new ones.
Here are a few things that help keep me accountable to my goals

Here are a few things that help keep me accountable to my goals

1. Daily to-do list
Keep a journal and write down 5 critical tasks for every day.
These tasks should all be stepping stones to short-term goals.
You should only write things down that you weren't already going to do.
If you read every day, don't put "Read" on today's list.

2. Short-term & long-term goals written on paper
Dedicate a page in your journal for each set of goals.
List them all in a legible manner.
Make sure you write them down in your own handwriting!
Cross them out as you achieve them.

3. Vision board
Make this on your computer & print it out.
Set it wherever you will be able to see it EVERY DAY.
It should include:
-Short & long-term goals
-Personal wants
-Power words
This is the vision board I made last year.
It may look silly to you, but it worked for me
