Before I even get started I need to say a few things

This album is like a rabbit hole. There’s so many things open for interpretation it’s not even funny.

This album is a multimedia experience which is why some things will fall to the waist side considering many things go
Hand in hand with the album.

The line between the screenplay and songs is as blurry as the concept that is reality and the internet
It’s not a perfect album by any means even conceptually but the themes of this album are really prominent and say a lot about our culture even 7 years later.
As I’ve said this album is basically my all time favorite album. It is timeless and there’s a reason I bought it way back then so I can still have it now in my iTunes library.

I’m very biased considering this is one out of the 3 albums that helped me branch out my music taste
When I was younger.

I love this album and I think it’s one of the best concept albums of all time as I have stated before. It’s also a must listen imo even if you think it is not for you before first listen.

This is also my first album deconstruction so dfkm
We start with the screenplay

Clapping for the wrong reasons is apparently a prelude to BTI that was released underneath Donalds YouTube channel. The prelude is actually a really good baseline for the album. We hear things being mentioned in songs later that we first see in the
Short film as it progresses. We’re not really introduced to characters and who they are but we follow the protagonist that is played by Donald himself walking around aimlessly in this mansion that is later on described. We see him interact with others but we don’t know who he
Is playing as.

I will mention the fact that the last song on CAMP is more or less not just the ending to that album but the beginning of this one.

The written screenplay is meant to be read while listening to the album btw
The written screenplay introduces our character as “The Boy” who is on their way home from CAMP.

Like we see in Clapping for the wrong reasons where Donald Glover is the protagonist it also transcends into short minute long clips for each song on the album.
The line between where Because The Internet ends and reality begins is blurry and rather vague even though it has good reason.

But let’s continue with the screenplay for now

Fast forward 15 years and in the written screenplay after CAMP The Boy is walking around in his
Fathers Californian mansion (his father is casted by Rick Ross btw. Also His father is very emotionally detached from his son)
And is a “professional internet troll” most of the time. He also hangs out with his friends, goes to the beach or just throwing big ass parties on his
Downtime.

Even though The Boy may seem to live a relatively luxurious life style he can’t help but feel like everything he does doesn’t matter at all. He continues to spiral in this dread and ends up inevitably lost.

These types of feelings usually have a cause and affect
And this was caused by a relatively traumatic event that happens in the screenplay. The Boy finds himself in the crossfire of a drive by shooting and witnessing someone die as he accidentally captures the moment on his phone.

He feels detached from reality and within the moment
And wonders what “death really means” in the age of the internet. Where that someone is dead but their legacy and even final moments continue to exist.

It does nothing but confuse The Boy even more.

While hosting a party he goes into an existential crisis and locks himself
In a bathroom then enters a cabinet that apparently has Coachella on the other side and gets eatin by wolves.

Yeah uh this is a good metaphor tbh. If you don’t get it then read the title of the album again

Anyways one of the themes in this album is surrealism. There are many
Moments that clearly depart from reality. It builds one of the core concepts that is this album which is

The internet is an alternate reality but we don’t treat it like that. We confuse the interactions we have on the internet to real ones.
There are 4 music videos that go with their respectable song from this album. One of them being Telegraph Ave.

The Boy goes to Oakland to visit an ex girlfriend hoping to find some guidance and someone to be there for him. This doesn’t play out well, the girl
has no desire whatsoever to see him and shuts him out.

The Boy utterly lost does the only thing he knows how to do. Party.

However this doesn’t go out well as The Boy goes into another existential crisis and destroys everything in his path. Telling everyone to leave.
The Boy then snaps and attempts suicide.

While recovering he learns his father has died. He travels to Stockholm To retrieve his father ashes and eventually dumps them over a bridge. In which He claims he feels nothing from doing so.

The Boy finds out his fathers money is
Running out and goes to drug dealing. He eventually finds Naomi (casted as Jhene Aiko) who seems to get the boy and carries the same existential dread the boy does. She’s the first character we’re introduced that understands him.
However they are polar opposites. Naomi lives in the present and thinks if nothing matters then it’s what you make of it while the boy.. well he thinks if nothing matters then what’s the point?

They fall in love but the boy never changes his ways and worries about
The negatives when it comes to the future.

Suddenly at the end of the screenplay the boy is apparently shot while in a sting operation because he was too sloppy at drug dealing.
The ending of the screenplay continues the concept in which any day can be your last but in the age of the internet it may not be.

Because the internet is the end of a sentence and may even be the answer to a question.
The Boy is a cursed being spiraling into existential dread feeling lonely and disconnected in a technologically connected world.
