Why the Blackhawks should change: a historical thread
@NHLBlackhawks is named after a gun, they use the name because the gun is named after a man, Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa, who fought against the US occupation of his village. The US coerced a couple Sauk & Fox to sign the treaty of 1804 and not the council or tribal leaders.
Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa was from the Sauk Nation The Sauk people are originally from Montreal Canada. In 1767 the Sauk were moved due to war over their homeland by European invading Nations. They moved on Fox Nation land and had an agreement.
Andrew Jackson and The United States created the Indian Removal Act of 1830 giving American militias the freedom to murder and remove any Native East of the Mississippi no matter what coerced treaty the United States signed with Indigenous Nations.
In 1833 Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa was captured by the United States and toured around to large crowds as a trophy and a symbol that the Native Nations have been defeated. In his autobiography he describes this tour as degrading experience, no human should be put on display.
In 1838 Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa died. He was buried in his village in current day Iowa. In 1839 James Turner dug up his body to put him on display once again.
The historical society that put Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa remains on display gave his body away for medical lectures, where his skull was stolen. The medical facility that used his body claims he ended up in a paupers grave. The historical society claims he burned in a fire.
There are legends that say in Southern Illinois an American Nationalist club has Mahkate:wi-meši-ke:hke:hkwa’s skull and still put him on display.
@NHLBlackhawks let Blackhawk rest, retire the racist caricature. He said in his autobiography being put on display was degrading and only used to claim his people conquered. It’s not an honor, it’s basking in the reflected glory of the genocide of the Indigenous People
