The "discourse" has me thinking about the best video game series (for intents here identified as 3+ games) so I did a top 15 on my lunch break. Mute this thread if you don't care.
Apologies to halo, doom, soulsbourne, pokemon, final fantasy, dragon age, elder scrolls, fallout uncharted, tomb raider, god of war, resident evil, diablo
No apologies to call of duty, Grand Theft Auto, & Assassins Creed One through Unity (Origins innocent & I hear Odyssey too)

15. Paper Mario
The later ones suck a lot of ass, but the first two being basically perfect balances them out. Pretty much a timeless JRPG series, the first one is almost 20 years old now is still better than most.

14. Fire Emblem
They have a tendency to be hit or miss, but the writing is usually pretty good and if you like tactics (i'm cold on them) all the better.

13. Arkham Batman Games
Arkham Knight was pretty meh, and I'm not trying to have a discussion about "superhero zeitgeist discourse" but the combat and stealth mechanics changed a lot of how big studio games operate. Also they are fun.

12. Life is Strange
I wish these games got more of a chance, but it's just a hard pitch to get people to play a slow investigative game that unfolds pretty deliberately.
Anyway they make you feel a lot.

11. Warcraft
WoW kind of hijacked the franchise, but the early ones were so good. Tides of Darkness was basically my favorite game as a kid and Reign of Chaos is up there at the top of the RTS GOAT lists.

10. The Witcher
Everyone mad at CD Projekt Red right now (rightly so) but Witcher is still good. No game has done grey morality better and Wild Hunt is when it all comes together.
Wouldn't mind a round of cards...

9. Zero Escape
Across between Saw, Escape Rooms, SciFi, ZE are some of my favorite games, and I'm still in awe of the amount of effort that probably went into writing the second game.

8. Mass Effect
I know there's a lot of whining about how 3 ended, (idk i thought it was fine) but 2 is a force, and old Bioware's writing was always on full display.

7. Bioshock
Opinions kind of all of the place on the series. Infinite is always going to be one of my favorites, and I think a lot about how not trendy it was to release and anti-capital, anti-American game in 2012.

6. Yakuza
Perfectly balancing being goofy and serious, they are a ton of fun. While they don't have the commitment to continuity from game to game I usually like, they are perfectly written and the last four they made are all really excellent.

5. Legend of Heroes: Trails Series
Best world building ever hands down. Not really close with anything else. The only knock is you have to kind of tough out the first game, but it's not like it's bad. Just more of a standard JRPG.
They make you do the Leo point

3. Shin Megami Tensei
Always thoughtful, I'm always so impressed with the thematic settings. While the demons/personas tie them all together there's always a strong message asking you to take a look at yourself and what you value.

2. Legend of Zelda
Again I feel like I don't have to explain this one. 19 games with very few misses.
You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

1. Danganronpa
*everyone groans at my shit*
I wouldn't keep saying it if I didn't believe it. Start to finish, the trilogy is uniquely perfect for the moment we are living in.
