So, I was at this gym this morning watching news coverage of COVID vaccines arriving at hospitals in Michigan, Ohio, NY, etc. And I'm watching the pharmacists (?) unload boxes of vaccine vials into a -70F freezer at a hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan & the reporter is...
...practically crying behind her mask & all I can see, everywhere in that tiny room, is PLASTIC. Each box of vials is packed with plastic peanuts inside styrofoam padding inside boxes & it hits me that this isn't just a story about ingenuity, science, logistics, manufacturing...
...but also energy. So while you're thanking the scientists, FDA admins, the President, nurses, big Pharma, small Pharma, doctors, truck drivers, pilots don't forget to thank the industry that made it possible to keep a substance refrigerated at -70 degrees while shipping it...
...all over the country (& world) packed tightly in plastic so it won't break. And that makes the jet fuel & diesel fuel the trucks & planes use to bring it to you. And that makes the natural gas burned in power plants that keeps those refrigerators going...
... And that makes oil to put into generators to keep the refrigerators going if a snow storm (like the one about to hit the northeast on Wednesday) knocks out the power....
So, thank you to the fossil fuel industry and petrochemicals industry for making this possible. Because without the cheap and reliable fuels & chemicals that industry brings us, there's no way mass manufacturing and distribution of this vaccine would be remotely possible.
