New paper today in @JAMAInternalMed: how does EHR use compare between US and non-US clinicians? Short answer: US clinicians spend almost 50% more time per day actively working in the EHR. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2774129
Huge thanks to my fantastic co-authors @DBatesSafety @robert_huckman @Cutler_econ @ldowningmd @tophersharp Tait Shanafelt Arnie Milstein and Kevin Schulman, and thank you to @ChristineSinsky for this great commentary https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2774120
EHRs have shown promise to improve quality, but there are also concerns over their impact on clinician well-being, productivity, and burnout. Lots of new studies use metadata to measure clinician EHR work related to this question, but most are limited to a few institutions
We used a unique new dataset containing nearly all of Epic's ambulatory customer base, both in and out of the US., for Jan - Aug 2019. We describe how clinicians (MDs and APPs) use the EHR, and compare between US and non-US health systems.
