This weekend I learned that Deacon House was closed on December 10. Deacon House was an emergency drop-in shelter located in Charlottetown for men who struggled with substance abuse. There have been rumours swirling around for months that Deacon House was going to close.
On Nov 24 @jsjaylward was asked status of Deacon House during QP. He answered “There was lot of rumours going around and misinformation...about Deacon House and it was closing. That was completely incorrect. I don’t know where it came from but Deacon House continues to operate.”
In less than three weeks it went from being misinformation and rumour to reality. The men who previously stayed at Deacon House are now being referred to Smith Lodge, where nine beds have been opened up. This means we have not added any significant new capacity ...
to help homeless and housing insecure people. We have simply moved them from one location to another. The confusion, uncertainty and secrecy surrounding this decision is making an already challenging problem even harder.
