Happy Clark Terry Centennial!
Nobody ever swung harder or brought more human dimension to the bandstand. Here he is on flugelhorn, carving up his own tune in 1958 with Thelonious Monk, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones.

George Wein once asked Duke Ellington to name the best trumpeter who'd ever played in his band. Without hesitation: "Clark Terry." When George asked Count Basie the same question, he got the same answer.

I'd like to think Gerry Mulligan would answer the same way too. Just listen to his bantering exchange with Clark on the back stretch of this cut, recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1960
If you haven't seen the doc film 'Keep on Keepin' On' (2014), get on it! A beautiful portrait of mentorship and resilience. Here's a great @checkoutjazz conversation about it with director Alan Hicks, @QuincyDJones and @JustinKauflin https://www.wbgo.org/post/clark-terrys-centennial-interview-quincy-jones-about-keep-keepin
