why non-black people shouldn't use aave - a thread
aave stands for african american vernacular english. it is a dialect made by black people that has been taken by non-black people, misused by non-black people, and mocked by non-black people.
many people don't know what aave is despite using (and misusing) it constantly. they don't know that the "stan twitter language" they're using comes from black people.
aave is not a new thing. it didn't come to be recently. nicki minaj did not create the word "chile". aave was born out of slavery and it's still used by black people to this day.
here are some examples of aave: sis, chile, period(t) pooh, finna, on fleek, asf, "not ____", "it's the ____ for me", miss girl, saying yo instead of your (i.e get yo bag sis), extra, woke, spill the tea, straight up, lit, yasss, mad (i.e y'all mad annoying), pressed, wbk, etc.
now onto why non-black people shouldn't use it; 1) non-black people should not use aave because they use it to make fun of us. aave and blaccents are heavily used when non-black people want to seem ghetto or aggressive. whether it's intentional or not, it's still harmful to +
use us and our vernacular as the butt of a joke. it only allows more people to shit on us. 2) it's constantly misused. y'all don't understand how aave works; y'all don't know how aave is used because a lot of you never grew up around it. the first some of you were exposed to +
it was on stan twitter or other social media (most likely tiktok). here are some examples of misusing aave: using "chile big boobs what?" when it doesn't make sense in a situation, "sis you need to calm down and that's on period pooh", "period sis chile", etc.
3) y'all overdo it and that contributes to the misuse of aave. you don't need to use aave three times in one sentence. all it does is make you look dumb. 4) it makes a lot of black people, including myself, uncomfortable. like i said above, we are constantly used as the butt of +
the joke. we were mocked and made fun of for how we speak only for it to become popular when the white woman says it. it's not funny, nor is it cute. there's nothing to keke haha about when you don't even understand where the words you continuously misuse come from.
