How can you tell what side is the right side?

Here’s one way.

Ask one side to explain what the other side believes.
Ask then to explain why their opponents believe what they believe and would take the actions they take.
Now I tell you you may group all of humanity into two groups that are very important to understand.
Some people will respond with a best guess at honestly representing those with whom they disagree.

And they will permit themselves to be corrected, humbly. Because they know not what is in another’s heart.
But many, many will describe their opponents as cowardly, unredeemable, hateful, despicable creatures.
They will never permit a defender to displace the bogeyman they have created to represent their enemy.
And that’s how you can tell who is on the wrong side.
