To elaborate a little more on the breathing: it is very easy to discount 'breathing' properly as 'not important'. I mean, "if we didn't breathe, we wouldn't be alive, amirite?" is a common reflex.

But, heart rate and breathing are two foundational factors in the best performers
I'd ask all instructors and players to try this simple drill:

Breathe in 5 seconds, hold for 2, then breathe out for 5 sec. Repeat just 4-5 times, then try this self toss drill. Pay attention to your breathing...are you speeding it up? Do you find yourself tensing up so much
Your breathing pattern tightening up/quickening is a RESULT of your muscles tensing up. Shorter muscles are slower, less efficient muscles.
