Fascism has a specific definition. It doesn’t simply mean authoritarianism. It’s a modern political development of the past ~100 yrs. Trump & Republicans match the definition of fascism. It’s not really debatable. They simply haven’t yet succeeded in taking total control of govt.
But for anyone to think that we are simply in the post-election, transitionary period of a functioning democracy & not in the early stages of a prolonged struggle against a fascist movement in the US would be a mistake. https://mobile.twitter.com/BreeNewsome/status/1338483515697074176
This is why we need the elevation of commentators who are most studied on fascism & the rise of dictatorships historically & contemporaneously in other countries. People are watching events unfold but not necessarily with the full context of understanding that we need.
Fascists roaming the streets as a mob to terrorize racial & religious minorities & target places of worship is one of those things we need to understand as being part of how fascist movements operate & serve as a warmup to larger acts of violence in their bid to seize control.
