In response to my recent piece on Kuldeep Yadav's T20 struggles, I was asked to be a little more specific on the part where I wrote about his action.
Here's a thread explaining what I meant.
Here's a thread explaining what I meant.
First of all, to those who haven't read it, I would urge them to go through the piece and gain context of why this thread is being written. https://twitter.com/crickashish217/status/1335580252555374594?s=19.
Now to that action. As a left-arm spinner, Kuldeep is very "uniquely" placed to most conventional right-arm leg-spinners in T20 cricket. Take Chahal, as I noted in the piece, for example. Chahal, with his more front-on action and wider arm-angle, can make late adjustments

Psychologically, bowling is preempting the batsman's move and responding accordingly. But if you can also get an early sighter of what he's actually upto, it further helps being a step ahead of him. Chahal is a 'step ahead' of batsmen on most days.
For Kuldeep, however, getting that sighter is lot more difficult with a side-on body position and closed-in arm-angle. Again, important for anyone reading this thread to keep in mind that this is all in context of T20 cricket.

"When Kuldeep is at the top of his delivery stride, he can't flex his left-arm to an angle". Another aspect that I felt I must stand clearer on is why I feel that action will always aid a higher trajectory, which we know is just ripe for batters in T20. So, for this, I would..
..request anyone reading this, to take their left-arm high in a wrist-spin - normal or googly - position closer to the ear and move it forward to the point where the ball will have to be released. Were you able to make any "flex" or late change in your action?
If the answer to that is a "No", then you're in Kuldeep's position. However, and I made that very clear in the piece, I don't for a second believe the youngster should be changing his action. It may not be suiting the T20 demands, but Kuldeep's action will help him push forward
..as a Test and ODI bowler. It enables a natural drift into and across both left and right-hand batsman. We're already seeing an effort from Kuldeep to bowl quicker through the air and off the deck. Means he is focused on ensuring batsmen can't just play him off the backfoot.
In ODIs, I won't mind if Kuldeep starts playing ahead of Chahal even. I was really excited when Ravi Shastri after SCG's 5-fer said Kuldeep is now our first-choice Test spinner abroad. I thought they're thinking long-term. I have high hopes of him in those 2 formats. Not T20.
