Are you an Egyptian lesbian in the 2nd or 3rd century AD? Is there a woman you want to fall in love with you? Well, you might consider summoning ghosts to put a spell on her!

We have several surviving spells Egyptian women cast on other women. Let's dive in! #MedievalTwitter
The above image is a pair of 2nd-century lead tablets from Upper Egypt with spells on them in Greek. The spells direct a corpse-daimon (basically a ghost) named Horion to make a woman named Nike fall in love with a woman named Pantous, but only, apparently, for five months.
Fun fact: this may well have been an interracial relationship. Nike's name and her mother's name are Roman, while Pantous and her mother have Egyptian names. At this point in Roman Egypt, though, names were not always linked to racial or ethnic background.
Also, the "drawing of mummy" part of the spell is just amazing to me.
Another spell, on papyrus from the second century, was by a woman named Herais who wanted a woman called Sarapias to fall in love with her. It's *very* dramatic.
Herais demands the Egyptian god Anubis *AND* the Greek god Hermes make a figure named Euangelos to cause Sarapias to be attracted to Herais "now, now, quickly, quickly."

(NOW NOW)
Euangelos may have been a corpse-daimon, a ghost of the unquiet dead, being promised eternal rest by fulfilling the terms of the spell.

Egyptian lesbians summoning ghosts to make women fall in love with them. SO TYPICAL.

I ship it.
Here's spell #3, which is a doozy. Engraved on this tablet from the 3rd or 4th century, it is *very long* and extremely convoluted. Sophia, the spellcaster, wants to make Gorgonia fall in love with her.

She summons a ghost to "INFLAME" Gorgonia's heart, soul, & liver with love.
Sophia demands that the ghost she summons become first a fire-breathing daemon, then drive Gorgonia--inflamed with passion--into the bath-house, when the ghost is ordered to turn into a bath-woman.

Any spell that BEGINS "Fundament of the gloomy darkness" is not messing around.
The spirit must make Gorgonia into a frenzy of love for Sophia, "giving herself and all of her possessions to her." Gorgonia must be "drive[n]," "burned," "inflamed," tortured" by love for Sophia, which will drive her to the bath-house, where, I guess, Sophia will be waiting?
Yes, it's a VERY long spell. It's got a bunch of untranslatable magic words, a lot of repetition, and there's evidence that it was written down for Sophia by a professional that she hired.

Sophia was *not* messing around.
Those are some Antique Egyptian lesbian love spells! Go forth, filled with this new knowledge.

Now, now, quickly, quickly!
