After a night of OK sleep, some reflection on the Malzahn firing before the whomever hiring: My two main disappointments were, first in general, the continuing money-fueled toxicity of college sports. Everyone expresses concern while at the same time endorsing its corruption. 1/5
Second, specifically, the Auburn fanbase's impatience and (I fear) delusional demanding and grasping for something that might not be there. The assumption that money will always rescue us from the bad decisions money gets us into. How that can erode a community's soul. 2/5
With that, I'll move on. Auburn is family; Auburn is my family. You don't change your family; if you do, then you're not family. Some of the people who typify the attitude above have stood by me and others in our tough times. It's corny. Other fanbases just don't get it. 3/5
This is a unique coaching transition for me, because of my years of advocating for STUDENT-athletes. These are our students. But as I transition off faculty and into retirement after spring semester, my role will change as the head coach does. It's how things work. 4/5
And if I come off as one of those grandpas who talks like I'm talking now, it's because of what Auburn meant to us over the decades, and what we want it to continue to mean. It's something worth holding on to, despite the changes and pressures around us. #WarEagle 5/5
