My thoughts, a thread: https://twitter.com/socksfelloff/status/1338286870967496706
Yeah, fine and expected. That range of JPN machines has a factory-amended daughterboard which causes hell with DMA timing. It locks up Tanglewood and certain games running on Everdrive, and nobody has yet found a software fix. They're also very old models and hard to find now.
Interesting! It is impossible to add support for sprites, colours*, or resolution, but it is possible to do almost anything inside the cart and just software render the results, which is what I expect will be happening. May as well just be a Neo Geo cart at that point, though.
*with the exception of that bit banging/blast processing trick, but that's generally only useful for static images; there's no CPU left for gameplay.
Yeah this claim is fine. No idea of the specifics or the chip used (that model number was made up), but this is viable. Expensive, though! My guess is this was the major cause of problems for the title; it is not simple to implement and definitely not simple to manufacture.
No problems here, mappers are easy to implement. You could have a 1TB cartridge if you wanted. Seems massively wasteful, though. Bigger size is nothing to boast about - to me it just sounds like the tech was poorly written and doesn't make effective use of compression.
Might just be marketing hype. Bigger numbers sound better, right? Besides, it won't affect gameplay, it's a weird non-issue.
Yep this is great to hear. Pier Solar used this for CD audio, and there's plenty more MegaCD grunt you could take advantage of with a bit of R&D. Not complicated, just awkward and time consuming to pull off. Impressed with this one.
Well, Sonic & Knuckles did it. Could be anything - lock-on cart, online connector, multitap, DLC, time will tell.
All good, Tanglewood did this, too. It's never perfect due to precision levels without a realtime clock or a floating point processor, but only speed runners will be disadvantaged by the slight difference. I hope they've fixed the audio to match, or it'll be weird.
Nice. If you're adding extra hardware to the cart, may as well add save game support, too. Tried and tested, there's a Mega Drive memory map area for it already, no problems here.
Disappointing to hear, but these things happen. As long as it's not a conductor, it's not really a problem. Physical manufacture of cartridges is HARD, like, REALLY HARD, and pulling a whole batch to deal with this could bankrupt a company of this size.
Profanity warning in 3... 2...
Fuck off into the sun. "WM has your money now, we'll do what we want, eat shit" is the truthful answer. The egotistical prick needs to wrap this game up then wind the company down after this. I've some more calm and collected thoughts on the matter later. What a disgusting line.
Unsure what they mean by this. Not everyone will get their limited edition due to shortage? Or they're just not taking preorders for more? Poorly worded. Again, physical manufacture is hard. They'll have needed an entirely different pipeline for these, just extra complications.
Over-promised and under-researched. This project REEKS of "ideas guy" scoping bloat, feature creep, sky-high promises, and lack of proper planning and direction. So no surprises there - it cost more than anticipated.
This whole "investor/gems" thing rubs me the wrong way. No comment on the specifics but I won't be buying from other devs that do this. Scummy practice.
Just some clarifications on mistakes in the manual, and a couple of known issues. They don't appear to be game breaking. To comment would be hypocritical, all of my games have needed similar disclaimers.
Yep, cool. "Reflashing" existing carts isn't really possible, original MD games used mask ROMs and can't be wiped like UVROM or modern flash. In this specific instance, manufacturing new is the most cost effective way and will produce the best results.
Didn't buy so no real comments here, other than to reiterate this thing was scoped to hell and back, and WM really did over-promise on almost every single aspect of this game. The stick will have been one major factor in its delay.
However you feel about this game finally coming to light, absolutely nothing excuses WM for their business practices, communication and PR, the disgusting egotistical attitudes, and the stain they've left on the retro dev community.
I hope Paprium is incredible, I hope all of this has a happy ending, but I will never, EVER back this company again, and I encourage others to take a similar stance.
The effects of this saga reach into all the other MD projects in development from far better teams. Crowd funding will always have that "but remember Paprium" bitter taste, and will cause people to hesitate before backing new projects.
WM needs to deliver Paprium, refund and close down Project N, then wrap the whole thing up. They were once a shining beacon in this field, Pier Solar was an incredible undertaking and paved the way for many other budding retro devs, myself included.
But whatever empty shell of the once great WM remains, it is no longer competent nor capable of taking on projects like this. They should end on this high note and call it a day. The whole thing has left a bitter taste, and those trust issues could never be resolved.
