The last thing anyone needs is more Beeple analysis but... I've been in media 20+ years. I've seen huge successes. Seen huge changes. Seen no end of people chasing those successes, desperately trying to deconstruct them to learn from them. But here's what we actually learn -
The massive successes are anomalies. Not a new normal. The bigger the success, the further removed from normal. Kids media chased the next Spongebob, missing that it wasn't the next anything. Did a huge success boost the rest of the space? The answer's not what you want to hear.
Did authors all make more after Harry Potter? The amount authors make is now shockingly low. So undervalued that it's close to criminal. While it's far from a zero sum game, money going into the huge hits only brings more money into huge hits. Everything else gets riskier.
Successes attract new investors. But they want their hits. They'll only invest in what are already the top properties. Huge windfalls bring an all-or-nothing approach. There are very few alls and a whole load of nothings. It creates a larger divide that is much harder to cross.
We're not Beeple. And Beeple wasn't the next anyone. He is himself. He's earned success. He worked his ass off. But if you try to repeat what Beeple has done, you'll likely fail. There is no next Beeple. Only the next big anomaly. And the big windfalls may not be any good to us.
The big positive is this – it gets NFTs into the language. So what's a new normal? Normal is when normal people pay normal amounts for art from normal artists. When I see people saying they are going to gift NFTs this year, that will have impact. That will make a difference.
The positive is already happening – people assign value to your exclusive art. That's amazing. So make your art. Make the art you love. In your own way. Assign value. Cherish it. Protect it. You are your art's 1st collector. Make art and appreciate your art in a way you enjoy.
I reckon chasing the huge success will distract and disappoint. What people say they want and what they actually want aren't the same thing. It's very difficult to predict what people will love. You've got to do your own thing. The right collectors will find you. Hopefully.
Make the art you love. Make the art you believe in. Make the art you want to see. Yes, you've got to live. Yes, art should be valued. But don't get distracted by the lottery win stories. Make your own path and do what you need to do. Love and value your art and keep on making it.
