12 Key Highlights from United’s Stalemate Draw over MCI in the Premier League: the good and the bad.
1. Beating The Press.

A. Scott in particular does very well here. He takes an extra touch — invites both players then evades them.

B. Fred turns than a quick incisive pass. MUN have bypassed 4 players.

A result of teamwork and quick forward passing.
2. Central Exploitation.

MUN developed this pattern to progress the ball.

With the two CB’s split — MUN formed a triad of players to build out the back.

This involved Bruno dropping to free AWB, dragging their players and creating space in the centre — then switching left.
3. Team Sequence.

Mason with a great incisive pass. AWB begins his overlap.

Bruno makes a clever run.

Issue I: not enough players in the box.

Issue II: Rashy doesn’t make the run but instead asks for ball to feet.

Issue III: MUN having to resort to long balls to progress.
4. Set Pieces.

MUN have been improving in the danger of their set pieces well this season.

A. Shaw’s delivery was great but Lindelof’s timing, run and winning the aerial duel was massive to this corner (an improvement) — Scott’s run too.

B. Lindelof’s run & header again.
5. Running In Behind.

This was an excellent long ball from Lindelof — with a great dummy run from Bruno to get in behind MCI’s defense.

This is a pattern MUN have been attempting frequently: similar to the one from Lindelof to Marcus that won the penalty against IBSK.
6. Effective Pressing.

A. MUN were very fluid but maintained a 4-3-3 out of possession to prevent MCI central progression — forcing them wide.

It required our forwards to constantly track back: they did well overall but still a weakness.

B. Pogba’s press forces an error.
7. Evading Man-Man Marking.

A. The triad here allows MUN to take up an advantageous position to create space and transition quickly.

B. Bruno drops deep to offer AWB a passing option. A quick 1-2 evades MCI again.

C. An ill controlled through ball.
8. Struggle with Transitions.

A. AWB overcommitted pressing Cancelo, that left Sterling free — dragging Lindelof.

B. 3 MUN players left behind.

C. MCI had multiple options and space to run into.

D. Poor organization and communication: MUN did not shift to cover Lindelof well.
9. Verticality.

Pogba’s switch and recognition of central space here was excellent — Fernandinho dragged.

Quick incisive passes: space.

Scott getting up quickly: great gamesmanship. Marcus’ run too early but great positioning — he made multiple runs.
10. Through Balls.

MUN got in behind MCI’s defense much better in the 2nd half and that was a result of:

(A) Better urgency — “short” & “quick.”

(B) Better exploitation of space left behind MCI’s press.

Issue: Poor decisions in the final third, sloppy passes.
11. Martial.

MUN’s offense underwhelming: misplaced passes, struggle with central progression at times.

With Martial, MUN had a player that could hold the ball well, economical in possession and progress the ball in between the lines.

Ex: He receives well the to Bruno.
12. Defensive Solidity.

MUN maintained the basic defensive principles very well:

(A) Tracked their runners and prevented MCI from getting in behind the backline.

(B) Good positional discipline, organization and shape.

(C) Excellent blocks and clearances.
