Something has to be done about the epidemic of abuse and bullying in #Academia. Too many lives are being ruined & too many souls are being scarred by a feudal culture of unchecked power & cover-up. The most disadvantaged suffer most, silenced by job insecurity & misplaced shame.
I've witnessed repeated exploitation, harassment, & victimisation. With few exceptions, the victim typically ends up leaving quietly, hoping to move on with their lives. This is especially true for the most marginalised, who face the biggest risks for speaking out #BrokenAcademia
Imagine being a black, female, statistician working in medical research. You're surrounded by while, male, medics. They overrule your expertise. They demand you work long hours to support their projects for little credit. They dismiss your 'non clinical' research. What do you do?
I myself have been bullied & marginalised. I haven't managed to work out why, but increasingly suspect it's because I have #ADHD. I behave 'differently' & have 'different' interests. But even I - a white male - haven't sought justice; because I believe I'd be victimised further.
But seeing others being bullied upsets me far more than my own treatment. As a privileged white male, I can draw on more reserves to keep me afloat. Others are not so lucky. It breaks my heart to see talented people get driven out of #Academia. But I'm usually powerless to help.
