I promise I'm not being a miserable old git here, I love the idea of this but I remember seeing Blue Monday on TOTP and liking it but not being blown away. I was wondering why, because obviously it's an amazing record, so I just took a look at the charts that week, and...! https://twitter.com/enotonik/status/1337929193821245441
Down 5 at 18... Fun Boy 3 - Tunnel Of Love

David Byrne on production. All female backing band including Caroline Lavelle, Annie Whitehead and Ingrid Schroeder. FB3's final single after just 2 years of inventive and sometimes terrifying releases
At number 10, Orange Juice - Rip It Up

The first time the great unwashed got to hear a 303 in action on one of the greatest blue-eyes soul records of the 80s
Also new in that week at 36, Altered Images with Don't Talk To Me About Love
And let's not forget Altered Images went top 10 in '81 with I Could Be Happy. It's fair to say there's probably a bit of this in Blue Monday's DNA
At 38, it's Japan doing a cover of The Velvet Underground

(Ghosts still scares me)
At 22, it's OMD with the Speak & Spell disco of Genetic Engineering
Hanging in there at 40, it's the single from Duck Rock which most people have forgotten - Malcolm McClaren's Soweto

But let's not forget Buffalo Gals was a watershed moment for loads of people, and I still stare in awe at the Duck Rock cover
At 31. Pretty much the antithesis of Tainted Love, it's the restrained electro-thud of Soft Cell's Numbers
And knocking Billie Jean back to 3, it's The Eurythmics with Sweet Dreams

Merry Christmas
Maybe, just maybe, New Order performing a live version on TOTP didn't do it for me at the time

In hindsight I love this version, but as a nearly 8 year old becoming obsessed with records, it might have seemed a bit too rough round the edges at the time
If there was a record which blew this kid's mind back then, it was Human League topping the charts around xmas '81. It probably sounds hokey to younger folk, and those old enough at the time became sick of it, but to me it still sounds like the future

Bye
