PM @ImranKhanPTI address at #ClimateAction
has been interpreted in a most inaccurate manner, due in principle to the fact that his statement regarding the future of #CoalPower in
is vague. Some diplomats, like @ukinpakistan, also got it wrong. Here’s a quick explainer:

Currently, developers are constructing 4 project for 2,640 MW of *NEW* coal power capacity which will be connected to the
grid by 2022. There’s no going back on these projects unless the @PakPMO is willing to bear the cost of damages to the respective IPPs’ sponsors.

Another two new #CoalPower projects of 630 MW capacity have been issued letter of support by the
government and their sponsors, namely CIHC Pakistan and Siddiqsons Energy, are busy in arranging finance for those projects. These projects are planned to complete by 2023.

Another interpretation that
will have no power based on coal, as suggested by @AlokSharma_RDG, is completely incorrect. The country will have about 10,000 MW of #CoalPower fleet by 2023 from ZERO in 2015. The
gov’t has signed ‘take or pay’ contracts of 30-year duration!

Unfortunately, it’s clear that a)
will expand its #CoalPower capacity in the next few years and b) rely heavily on coal power plants for many, many years to come. @PakPMO speech at #ClimateAction
will have negligible impact.
