Why the Mbappé Dream move is at risk?

I’ll just briefly discuss reasons why it’s very difficult from a financial & circumstantial viewpoint to get Mbappé’s signature next summer.

Disclaimer: I am not saying it is absolutely impossible, it’s just extremely difficult.
Reason 1: The ML-JPM Debt
Not a lot of people are aware, but back in February 2019, we took a debt totalling €575m from Meryll Lynch & JP Morgan for the Bernabeu remodel. We owe the banks 25m per year over 30 years + 2.5% interest. That makes high-value signings difficult to get
Reason 2: The Covid Effect
It’s already established we took a massive hit despite keeping a positive cashflow at the end of the fiscal year; we still needed to make wage cuts, we still cut chunks from the budgets, & we took a huge loss at liabilities & revenue streams (1/3)
The first 3 revenue rows here are ought to disappear in 2020/21 because, as opposed to English TV rights, Spanish Dont get the same amount of revenue; they rely on ticket sales, membership fees, intl marketing & so on. With all that gone, huge chunk of revenue is eaten up (2/3)
23% of the club’s returns come from the stadium
15% come from intl & friendly games
39% come from marketing
The first two are practically inexistent the last 10 months, & the last one has been reduced significantly due to staff cuts & turnovers (3/3)
Reason 3: The €300m Down the Drain
In 19/20, we attempted a massive squad overhaul that saw us throw 300m at the transfer market, two thirds of which (€175m) were spent on Jovic & Hazard. Granted Eder, Rodrygo, & Ferland were moderately successful, the rest wasn’t (1/4)
Out of shape in preseason, a series of unfortunate injuries, & spending a total of 291 days sidelined with only 2 goals & 3 assists to his name in 1.5 seasons, €115m Eden serves as a warning sign to investors to think twice before throwing heavy bags of cash at one player (2/4)
Either benched, uncalled, or sidelined for injury, Jovic also did not justify his €60m pricetag & only 2 goals, he didn’t convince Zidane to start him consistently over Karim. His & Eden’s injuries are not their faults, but they made them financial liabilities (3/4)
After the failed overhaul, it’s dubious to watch the club repeat its error & spend more than 100m, let alone 200m, on a single player because after what happened, they’re no longer in the gambling business unless a huge sale occurs (4/4)
Reason 4: The Youth Project.
Granted that the striker position is occupied for the long run by Benz with Jovic standing by, theoretically Mbappé would be placed on the wings to play as a RW or LW. That poses a serious implication for the project that Perez invested in (1/3)
Vinicius (€45m) Rodrygo (€45m) Reinier (€30m) Brahim (€17m) Kubo (?)
€137m+ invested in youth wingers alone, with Hazard (LW) & Asensio (RW) already long term options, all of these players are in line waiting for their chance to return & start for the club regularly (2/3)
In times of necessity it might make sense, but a high value, undisputed starting winger acquisition would not only torpedo the youth development, it would create oversaturation of winger positions & force multiple players out. Doubt Perez would entertain that thought (3/3)
Reason 5: The Unrealistic Demands
It’s no secret that we had interest in Mbappe back in 2017, but the unrealistic wage demands cut our interest short, which was the logical step. He went on with PSG to earn around €18m a year or so. Not even Ramos makes that much (1/2)
PSG’s new offer is reportedly dazzling him with a Neymar-par wage, aka north of €36m. That’s almost double our highest earned, Hazard. Not only does that make zero financial sense to us, but we have little negotiation pull power when it comes to those demands (2/2)
Reason 6: The Decreasing Player Market Value
The Covid crisis didn’t just affect wage cuts but it also forced many clubs to sell their players at discounts to break even. Whatever we could’ve sold we did, & whatever we have doesn’t add up to a 100m (1/3)
We sold Hakimi, a highly valued young wingback, for €44m, & Reguilon, one of the uprising fullbacks, for €33m. We let the €65m valued James leave for free. We cannot even get a club to pay anything for €100m valued Bale. The ROI on high value players is deeply negative (2/3)
The remaining expendable players, Isco, Marcelo, Nacho, Mariano, possibly loamees like Ceballos, & all players we deem non-essential do not total more than €50m in the current market, half of which could leave for free. That rules out the huge sale opportunity (3/3)
In the end, We all hope the stars would aline & we somehow get his signature, but unfortunately that seems far fetched due to the combination of circumstances & extraordinary events. The takeaway piece here is to tone down your expectations. You never know what could happen ⚽️.
