You might have come across this report. This is news that should centre the non-payment of wages. @the_hindu covers the point about contractualisation in the last paragraph and devotes to the "vandalism". Now, a thread on corporate-media-government nexus: 1/n https://twitter.com/h_tejas/status/1338374631284064256
Economic Times/ TNN seems to have been the earliest to report it on Saturday morning. See the screenshots. It is of course a news about "workers on a rampage" Shouldn't expect any better from a pink paper but it mentions the lathicharge and the workers hospitalised. 2/n
The report covers the central dispute, the non payment of wages and violation of contract. “... they were promised a salary of Rs 16k per month, they were given.. Rs 12k. There was a 3 months delay in.. salaries. [They] were..made to work overtime without being paid extra,” 3/n
The Company and the Karnataka Gov't start firefighting. Just hours later, the news has completely changed. The ET article has now become a puff piece for Wistron. No mention of police action, injuries, or details about workers' grievances.
Synopsis replaced to K'tka minister's quote defending the company and blaming "external force". Now it is common for outlets to edit stories as more information comes in (though they should probably mention the edits), but to change a piece entirely is sus. 4/
Sure, go ahead and add new versions but to take away someone else's versions and delete important information about the injuries and replace it with the number of jobs the company will create and the investment numbers? 5/
"Last month ET reported that Wistron finalised plans to invest Rs 900 crore in addition to the Rs 1947 crore committed.."
Like Fuck Off 6/
Like Fuck Off 6/
"We are shocked [that they] resorted to violence without even raising their grievances..& looking at if any external force instigated workers...". fuck you too
Remember Reliance Power workers were among the first to be arrested after right wing violence at Bhima Koregaon. This government will use UAPA against workers to protect corporations' interests. 8/n
More shit by TNN. Workers are "louts" and Karnataka’s image is tarnished. https://twitter.com/BangaloreMirror/status/1338008277838417920
Good! Should teach the companies to not mistreat workers. https://twitter.com/jgopikrishnan70/status/1338382774969851904
Also shame on @the_hindu
Funny that I came across this news only because comrades in Australia sent the original ET report reported on a blog. @ASF_IWA
More shameful journalism: https://twitter.com/ndtv/status/1338484702001262593?s=20
