I want to vomit. I finally let myself do the math on our tithes and offerings to see how much of it went to welfare, humanitarian aid, and church sponsored charity projects. Out of $82,000 donated in tithes and offerings during our 17 years of marriage, only $301.18 did any good.
Oaks said the church donated 40 million a year. I went with the more generous number of 57 million (2 billion since 1985). I divided that amount by 7 million (assuming half of the claimed membership is active, pays tithing) to see how much would be donated per person.
The per person amount is only $8.14 per year. We gave as much as we could afford to give trusting the church to be the most honest and generous in caring for the poor. Instead, we just helped the corporation get hundreds of billions richer. I feel so ill.
We added 4 years of donations by our 8-11 year old son since he was a tithe paying member for those 4 years.
What I would give to have that $82,000 back. Right now my heart is focused on feeding the food insecure in America. According to our local food bank, $1 can provide 4 meals. If that’s true, our church donations could have fed 328,000 meals to hungry folks.
