On our campuses, at our masajid, fundraisers & conferences, figures associated with Zionists, Assadists, CVE etc. are sometimes given platforms at our events.
When backlash ensues, it is often met with, “Why does it really matter? This isn’t going to Free X, it’s just an event.” https://twitter.com/shakspeak/status/1337941339023917056

It matters because this is it for us.
Being able to make these decisions - and choose either way - implies that we are in a place of safety from those oppressions.
We aren’t in Jerusalem, we aren’t in a tent in a no-mans land, we aren’t in a cell due to WOT targeted attacks.

We aren’t taking on the fight on the ground. This is it, in this moment. These are the decisions we make, now.
Our legacy as Muslims in America will be defined by these decisions. How will we nurture & sustain His cause if we can’t maintain the basics in our communal affairs?

As Western Muslim cynics badmouth the freedom fighters and martyrs in the Motherland, listing their shortcomings, debilitating cultural practices, and reasons for their downfalls, we have just as many demons to face in promoting our cause as Muslims in America.
We have insurgents in our community that serve our oppressors. When planning to disrupt a Middle East commission event last year for having an israel table, the PRESIDENT of the org gave my and friends’ photos & info to the Seattle & UW police to intercept & arrest us if we went.
MSAs and masajid routinely receive backlash from Palestinians when inviting Zionists to speak on Judaism. When a local mosque here hosted a Zionist, who spoke about israel in the same room we use to pray, they ignored the Palestinian women who tried to hold them accountable.
It “matters” because this is it.
This is the precedent being set for our interactions with these oppressive agencies - the precedent that will rule once Muslims have an actual system, society, and presence in America to be reckoned with.
What legacy will we choose to leave?
