So this is my attempt to help raise #MentalHealthAwareness & do a little rant on the side. There is a reason every brain scientist agrees that social media can be harmful to our brains; it’s because we were not designed to take in so much info all at once https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/health/a13083796/twitter-mental-health/
So we all must have read on the Oge matter, the attempted suicide and the tweets or trolling that went on when she first posted the video and I must say, I have seen many things done here but this one was bad.
So is Twitter toxic? Or is social media bad for you?
Twitter like all SM has good things but like everything in life, when taken in excessive amounts it becomes bad. I am sure some of us have read research that shows the designers of SM apps built them to be addictive. It’s the only reason why majority of us spend too much time
So, what is my take on what happened to Oge, I would say without knowing all the facts, that a combination of factors led to it. Trolling or cyber bullying does not cause depression (pls note, depression is not sadness, they are different) but bullying can trigger depression
Depression is the leading cause of suicide and that a person posts a video talking suicide, is not attention seeking behavior (yes some people do it, but note, the minute methods are being discussed, it’s no longer clout chasing) it’s a desperate cry for help. #mentalhealth
When I saw the cyanide or ricin tweet, I knew this was going to be ugly.
So, to all those who rushed to get to help, thank you. To those who kept trolling(with or without deleted tweets) please do better next time. We all must tone down the toxicity today. #MentalHealthAwareness
So, let me explain the difference between mental health and mental illness. We ALL have mental health; it’s a reflection of our state of wellbeing. We ALL have measures of our mental health; some are at very high levels, majority have suffered serious dents to it during COVID
With the lockdown, the recession and the ‘incoming second wave’ all Nigerians especially have had serious hits to our mental health. We need to be gentle on each other. One sign of low levels is how irritable you become, especially to those around you (i.e. our SM ‘friends’)
So, to all the keypad warrior, sometimes your need to lash out and troll those whom you believe hate your faves(BBN stans, this is for you) is a reflection of the state of your mental health.
If you are always angry and frustrated, it’s not the world that is bad, you need help
So to help restore your mental health today, if you note your levels are low, kindly take time AWAY from whatever SM triggers you (I left Facebook for this reason)
Reconnect with people offline, especially those who help you get better. Sleep also helps, it recharges the brain.
Eat right (reduce processed food) and spend time outdoors meditating especially in the mornings. If you are religious, prayer helps with our mental health, particularly if the prayer is about being grateful (not killing all our enemies, all the time)
Invest in your recreation.
Finally, do whatever works for you and do not apologize for whatever you do that helps restore your mental health (I spend money on good food, and I never feel sorry for doing so)
As we move today, kindly help to reduce the toxicity you see around you. #MentalHealthAwareness
“With cable news you have a choice. You can change the channel any time you’re overwhelmed or bored,” she says. “With social media there’s a loss of control”
This ☝🏾☝🏾is what we are dealing with and we all must regain control over our SM use, for the sake of our mental health.
