These middle to last part of the season firings are so interesting to me.
Not something that happens much at the high school level.
I once knew in week 3 that I would be dismissing my Defensive Coordinator at end of season. I inherited him that year. https://twitter.com/Raiders/status/1338315272063750146

I just made sure to play a larger role on a weekly basis with the defense. I also called in a former DC of mine to come help. The current guy enjoyed having him around.
It wasn't a long term thing though because he was driving from Temecula to San Juan Capistrano to help.

The DC I inherited was a young coach, maybe 21-22.
Shouldn't have been a varsity coach, and here he was calling a Varsity defense.
I let him go at 730 am the day after our last game.
I was VERY ready to turn the page, and hire a new DC.

It was a quick meeting.
It was my 4th year as a Head Coach, and I had never had to let someone go. I didn't know how to do it.
So, I called a former coach of mine who was also the VP of a large, international business that you would recognize the name of.

He's in the type of position, in the type of a company who would fly to Paris to just fire someone. Wild.
He would go fly to New York to play a round of golf with someone, just for business purposes.
Anyhow, he gave me GREAT advice about firing someone that I carry with me still

He said "Biggest mistake people make when letting someone go is allowing it to be turned into a job review, or a job interview. That's not what it is. You've made up your mind. Thank them for their time devoted to the team, and let them know their services no longer needed."
He shared examples of meetings he had been a part of where the employee you are letting go ended up arguing with their manager, and sometimes the manager even changing their mind right there in the meeting to let them stay, but ended up letting them go later.
"Don’t be a jerk about it, but there isn’t any reason to talk long about it. If they want an honest review of their performance, do that at a later date. This gives them time to cool off, and gather themselves. They won’t listen to you in that meeting, they will be too emotional."
Fortunately, I only had to fire one Assistant Coach as a Head Coach for 8 years.
