I did not wish to manifest my opinion on this case as I don't like to use social media that much and others with longer reach have done it better than me, but I think the numbers here are more relevant than me being in my comfort zone (1/many) #UbirajarabelongstoBR
I personally don't believe in each county being the only ones able to store their fossils; but there is a difference between agreeing on exporting a specimen to another country and a specimen being poached to another country and especially a specimen like this (2/many)
My summarized critics to the paper are
01 - Poor research and not understanding the law and giving an erroneous attestation of legality, putting this very lightly as I can't confirm all authors knew what they did is illegal, but I am certain at least one them did (3/many)
01 - Poor research and not understanding the law and giving an erroneous attestation of legality, putting this very lightly as I can't confirm all authors knew what they did is illegal, but I am certain at least one them did (3/many)
02 - The total lack of cooperation between countries, it excludes Brazilian authors and this actions further the gap existing between science produced by developing and developed countries. [...] (4/many)
This is not out of any "social quota" for Brazilian authors but if I understood correctly it is stated in the law it is necessary to do this to ship a Brazilian fossil from the country and does not benefit in any form the home country from which fossils were found (5/many)
03 - Lack of impactifull publications is one of the reasons quoted on why Brazil's government should put less money into science, by poaching a clearly important specimen like SMNK PAL 29241 you not only "steal" the description of this specimen [...] (6/many)
but you also contributes to those saying Brazil should put less money into science and hampers development of further studies in Brazil and in many/all areas not only paleontology. Creating a loop that makes it even harder for Brazilian scientists to do their job (7/many)
Now into the topic of it should be repatriated to Brazil.
YES, not out of of nationalism "Brazilian fossils for Brazil" (even if that is what the law says) but for the following reasons (8/many)
YES, not out of of nationalism "Brazilian fossils for Brazil" (even if that is what the law says) but for the following reasons (8/many)
A - SMNK PAL 29241 is an holotype of a taxon only know from Brazilian and by this reason alone I think it is enough to say it should be housed here and not across seas (9/many)
B- SMNK PAL 29241 has insane preservation and I am sure it will be target of further research of colleges interested on its integument structures. As it is, described by a team exclusively comprised of foreigner authors and housed in a foreigner institution [...] (10/many)
it only will benefit those and not Brazil/Brazilians if/when further studied. So leaving it as it is just benefit the criminal that poached the specimen and the receivers of the poached specimen and that finance this kind of crime (11, many [Yes there is more])
The biggest problem of this situation is that at least part of the team knew what they were doing is illegal and they decided to do it anyway. If some form of partnership was proposed to a native author/institution this would be way less problematic [...] (12, almost ending)
as a team with Brazilian and foreigner author would benefit both the people that have the fossil and the country the specimen was poached from without the need for us to write big or many Tweets about it (13, couple more to finish)
To foreigner colleges please share the threads of others talking about this case, is the perfect opportunity to show fossil poaching, punish the ones that committed and finance it and show what can be done so both parts win studying fossils in similar situation [...] (14/15)
Thank you all for reading this, if you want more details on this I would suggest talking to @alinemghilardi, @pegasaurus_42, @paleotaissa or others more experienced than me that will for sure be happy to explain it in more details
