Seeing a lot of anger at the positive reviews for Cyberpunk, asking how the media could have 'gotten it so wrong'. The way i see it, there are ultimately 'three Cyberpunks' atm (cont...)
The first is the game initially promised by CDPR: a deep rpg with a truly responsive open world. This game doesn't exist and people are right to be disappointed/mad about that.
The second is a AAA open world action game that runs well on high end PCs. Opinions on this will vary, but I think this is a brilliant game that few get to experience properly atm. The media reviewed this version alone because CDPR manipulated the review process to ensure this.
The third is just a busted ass videogame that should never have been released on last gen systems in this state. It feels impossible to appreciate any part of it when the fundamentals are so poor, and when the truth of it was intentionally hidden prior to release.
I dont think the media failed in saying Cyberpunk is good. I think we failed in not pushing back against a review process that was deliberately designed to deceive. The overall tone of coverage would have been so different if we knew what console people were about to endure.
I certainly hope we learn from this and never again go along with any review process this restrictive and manipulative.
