Starting to get asked by patients if I’ll take a Covid vaccine when I get my chance and my answer has been 100% yes.

I have been reading and following it all pretty closely and I think that both the vaccines we’ve seen so far are safe, effective and totally worth it. 1/
Development has been fast. But there are (at least) three reasons.

1st: The set-up for this vaccine has been in the works for years, both for other purposes (cancer mostly) and in anticipation that a virus like this might come along. The techniques were well understood. 2/
2nd: Usually it takes extra time to build vaccines to be stable at room(ish) temperature, easy to transport, cheap(ish). These two are not: need -70/20 temp, need boosters, expensive. But they’re important enough to be released now, before the fancy coatings are designed. 3/
3rd: most importantly — there is usually a *ton* of downtime, waiting for approvals, signatures and paperwork. That’s all been expedited—*not* the safety part. It’s like you’ve bought something with “tap” instead of having to go in person to get a money order from your bank... 4/
...and then have it snail mailed to you & then witnessed by a lawyer & then back to the bank & finally you get cash & you can go back and buy your thing...instead, you just “tap” and you get it. Same product, way less down time.

So...get a chance for the the vaccine? Take it! /
