So, the controversy of the very messy Longbourn ... personally, I like it as an antidote from perfectly up-to-date and neat heritage film sets. #hatm
The visuals of the entrance to the ball are very good. I've always been a fan of that part, even though it's completely exaggerated. #hatm
I want to go on a whole rant about the hair ... The pre-Regency actually had a lot of messy hair by later standards! Artful curls and loose strands were really fashionable, but people just think it looks bad. :( #hatm
The actual P&P dialogue just doesn't work in this because it's not as naturalistic as the new dialogue. Always frustrating! Point to Andrew Davies. #hatm
Lizzy's hair being down is Bad but I do love the Netherfield interiors! Badly missing Louisa for the hair/petticoat convo. #hatm
I love the rust-red dress! It's more interpretive/artistic than accurate, but it's lovely. #hatm
Rosemary Pike is such an underrated part of this movie. Like we all know she's gorgeous and perfect as Jane, but she's Amy Dunne! We know what she's capable of. Will no-one write me the AU fanfic. #hatm
I do hate the Netherfield ball dresses - I think they probably looked better in 2005, like more in line with current fashion? And this Baroque dance they're doing is so out of period. #hatm
This one. Bad! #hatm
I like the Lydia's wearing a more obvious morning dress - the production doesn't do very much differentiation in that vein, I guess because women are just always wearing what would basically be morning dress in it. #hatm
I love Tom Hollander as Collins, but something always feels wrong ... I think he's just a bit too subtle for how intensely annoyed characters are with him. #hatm
I wish they'd made a distinction between Charlotte's dress when unmarried and married - make it clear that this has materially changed things for her. It's a big deal that she's a married woman now. #hatm
I do think Macfadyen is a great Darcy. Probably my favorite. He's just a great actor. I would also like to see a fic where he refers to "his majesty the spinach, king of edible leaves". #hatm
The back of the striped dress is interesting - I feel like it must be based on an extant example, but I can't think of what it would be? It's so unusual that I can't imagine Durran just doing it out of nowhere. #hatm
I LOVE this shot. Macfadyen's posture hints at the early training a young gentleman would have had in stance and dancing from childhood. #hatm
Jena Malone might also be my favorite Lydia. Her sudden presumption of grown-up airs when she comes back home married is *chef's kiss*. #hatm
I love the rushing-around-cleaning scene. It's just cute! The squalor of Longbourn is very overdone, but ... it's well choreographed. #hatm
It's a little thing, but showing Kitty and Mary together at night to imply that they maybe grow together now that Lydia's not around to pull Kitty to her is a nice touch - and showing the maidservant headed up to the top floor, singing. #hatm
I want to take a moment to recommend "Irony & Idyll: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park on Screen" by Marie Sørbø - it has a really good discussion of both the 1995 and 2005 adaptations, how they balance the irony and romance of the original text. #hatm
Sørbø points out that 2005 dumps irony almost entirely to make the film a romance, but that the 1995 also injects idyll and subtracts irony in some parts to make for a more romantic adaptation than the one made in the 1980s. #hatm
