Many of my colleagues are changing their social media usernames to avoid running afoul of the pending policy from @SuptJaraCCSD & @CCSD_Trustees.

I’m not going to hide.

I will NOT be silent.

I will continue to exercise my 1st Amendment protected Rights.

1/
The policy was put out to silence @ClarkCountySch employees, to prevent us from shining a light on the issues facing our students & educators in the 5th largest school district in the United States.

Even though it was pulled from consideration, it had a chilling effect.

2/
The Supreme Court has made it clear that educators do NOT forfeit their 1st Amendment protected Rights simply because we are employees.

The trustees are elected officials, & should expect, & welcome, input from everyone. Especially from employees who will be brutally honest. 3/
The superintendent is @ClarkCountySch’s most public employee. He too should both expect & welcome input from everyone in the community, especially the employees of CCSD who already face retaliation for speaking out about what happens in our schools.

4/
Our working conditions are our students’ learning conditions.

We cannot and should not be silent when things are not as they should be.

We have an obligation to speak out & ensure those who have the power to correct those wrongs know exactly what is going on.

5/
We’ve been told that we have bargaining units to speak for us, but even if those bargaining units actually represented our interests all of the time, it would NOT justify the attempts to silence the employees of @ClarkCountySch.

6/
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
7/
A reminder, school districts are Government agencies.

The 1st Amendment doesn’t simply guarantee that speech is protected, it also guarantees the right to ask that grievances are addressed.

Publicly.

@ClarkCountySch employees are also members of the community.
