On our Forage Friday panel for @BlkMammalogists one of our panelists said he would like hunting to be more about food culture and less about gun culture! If you think about it...it really does make a lot of sense! #hunting #blackhunters #foragefriday
This is something I slightly talked about with @MarkLRHall for @HunterConserv ... gun culture in NA has not historically been very welcoming to folks of colour which makes it challenging when you are learning/starting to hunt
I want to hunt because I care about harvesting food sustainably, I want to contribute to wildlife management and I enjoy being outdoors. The way that hunting culture is advertised to me, is off putting. I don't want to give my money to companies who don't believe in my rights.
And yes, I know that not all gun owners are the way that the NRA portrays gun owners. Many of my friends hunt and own guns. BUT it's an imagery problem which is a challenge when you're trying to recruit more diverse populations to hunting.
We need to change the narrative about hunting and those who participate in hunting if we want to be more welcoming to those from backgrounds who have not been supported, and may have even been targeted, by gun culture.
