THREAD: This time 2 years ago I was elected as a Councillor. I was previously blocked 3 times by the Regional Party - that changed under Corbyn.
Being a Cllr doesn’t really happen to working class BAME women from a council estate, it’s a lot of pressure to do this real.

Being yourself in an organisation that frowns upon you insisting you’re called by your first name is exhausting.
I resisted from day one, it’s an attempt of conformity and institutionalisation.
Cllrs need to shape the council, not be shaped by it.

Calling staff “Officers” is military bizarre weirdness! These are public sector heroes, who commit to provide not rule over residents.
Every time I say it, it feels off and uncomfortable.

It’s hard not to be drowned by 300 page reports or overly decorative language. It doesn’t intimidate me, it’s just boring.
If we can’t communicate clearly, we have lost the point of public service.
I fear one day I’ll only be able to communicate in acronyms!

But I find local government amazing. For approximately £100 a month you get your bins cleared, streets swept, roads, pavements, street lights, libraries, schools, children’s centres, youth centres and so much more.
How we take that all for granted?!

Being a Cllr has taken over my life. Casework, reports, meetings... I’m blessed to have a supportive partner who enjoys life without me
I don’t think I’ve worked so much and still also have a job as I got bills to pay.

I’m not sure what the Labour Party thought I’d do and why they blocked me so many times. I obviously come across more exciting then I really am
But I’m here now. Enjoying it, and trying to still figure out how to work the council printer!

Anyway I want to thank @modgesh who was an amazing Campaign Manager and remains a solid ally and comrade.
He worked his butt off to get me elected in a really tough (and cold) by-election. I’m forever grateful x
