1. Today’s Sunday Times article should be read by everyone. Instead of protecting the British people and the UK economy, there can be no doubt the Johnson government has failed in every conceivable way. Scientists & MPs urged Johnson to pursue #ZeroCovid

2. Instead, he and Rishi Sunak sought out fringe voices who spouted evidence-free theories about herd immunity. They ignored experts and listened to people who told them easy lies. https://twitter.com/devisridhar/status/1338044279508373504
3. The sheer of ignorance of the Great Barrington Declaration moved me to join with researchers and medics from around the world to write the John Snow Memorandum, which set out the accepted science on #COVID19 https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1317552332276699144
4. We know what works. We’ve seen countries successfully reduce the impact of the pandemic, saving lives and protecting their economies.
The UK has not had one of the highest mortality rates by accident.
The UK has not had one of the highest mortality rates by accident.
5. It’s not bad luck the UK has suffered the worst economic decline in the developed world. These things are a consequence of flawed government policy. Once again, if you haven’t read the Sunday Times article, please do. It is important we all know what this government has done.
6. Sadly, even if the vaccines perform as hoped, #COVID19 will be with us for a large part of 2021, possibly longer. In the meantime, we need to demand more from this government. The people of the UK deserve the world’s best pandemic response, not its worst.
7. The Johnson government has made it clear it doesn’t care about scientific evidence. It is unconcerned by loss of life, or long-term ill health. It has asked businesses big and small to endure financial ruin while it implements policies that increase the damage.
8. It has put the lives of the elderly, healthcare workers, essential workers, school staff and the wider community at risk with failed policy after failed policy. While inflicting misery on others, it has enriched cronies from the public purse.
9. It took courage to deliver New Zealand’s pandemic response. Courage and a sense of community. The same is true of Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan and elsewhere. Politicians engaged people by clearly communicating an objective and then offered the leadership needed to succeed.
10. I still don’t know what the UK’s objective is. The recent study from Manaus suggests that herd immunity through infection is a pipe dream. 76% infected, and still transmission continues. https://twitter.com/devisridhar/status/1338121479511302144
11. The UK government has talked about following a middle way, but rather than protecting health or the economy, experience tells us both have been badly harmed by this approach. https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1315914586927837185
12. The government seems to be clinging on until vaccines ride to our rescue. But what if they don’t work as well as expected? Or if there are problems with supply? Or protection doesn’t last as long as we hope? Doesn’t this middle way leave us vulnerable to another failure?
13. Rising cases suggest the turnaround in hospital admissions will be short lived and another lockdown will be necessary early in 2021. Unless @UKLabour start putting pressure on the government to implement effective public health measures, the failures will continue.
14. We will lose more people, see friends and family suffer the effects of #longcovid and endure yet more economic damage. If the unions don’t step up, they will continue to see members put in harm’s way.
15. And if the public continues to accept one of the worst pandemic responses in the world, that is what this government will continue to deliver. We need change and we need it fast. I would like to see concerted pressure put on this government to adopt a #ZeroCovid policy.
16. We know what has worked elsewhere. We should all be asking why we can’t have the same here. Life is close to normal in many countries.
If they can do it, why can’t we?
If they can do it, why can’t we?
