I don’t know why it never seems to occur to right wing comedians that the reason they’re not getting on TV (although many of them ARE) has fuck all to do with politics and is just the same reason 95% of ALL comedians can’t get on TV? That they’re just not what TV’s looking for?
I never got on TV much beyond a few slots on cable stand up shows because I just wasn’t what TV wanted; didn’t have the right look, always seemed older than I was, the material was radio-friendly but TV didn’t know what to do with it… Had a few nibbles in the late 90s…
… but by the early 00s it was obvious it wasn’t gonna happen that way for me, so I focussed on other things. Some of them have worked, some haven’t.
But I never thought TV was “discriminating” against me, like I was being denied my “right” to be on TV or something.
Comedians don’t have a “right” to get on TV any more than everyone who ever picked up a guitar has a “right” to a platinum album.
Nor does NOT getting on TV mean a comedian is “shit”. Some of the best live comics’ stuff doesn’t work on TV at all so TV doesn’t employ them.
TV is capricious, image-obsessed and always trying to be “on trend” (and, as such, usually about two years behind, but that’s another matter).
Some of us will get on. MOST of us won’t. It doesn’t have a lot to do with merit and it doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with politics.
End of rant.
