Hey people ! It's almost 1 year since #Betelgeuse started its show (I promise some exciting results soon, they have been submitted actually) but today it is also 100 years since Michelson & Pease measured its angular diameter at @MtWilsonObs using optical interferometry ! https://twitter.com/Astro_MiguelM/status/1209116390935932929
This was a revolution: stars became sphere with a finite size instead of dots.

#Interferometry combines the light of several telescopes to get a better angular resolution (to see more details). This technique is routinely used nowadays with @ESO's #VLTI or #CHARA at @MtWilsonObs
Along the XXth century, this technique was transferred to radio observations. And some famous observatories are using it (looking in details at the sky and not listening !). Here I am showing @almaobs and #NOEMA
And of course this technique was at the heart of two impressive results recently, both awarded the #Nobel prize: the #EHT observation of M87* and the studies of SgrA*.
