Leicester City 3-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
-Maddison (27’, 44’)
-Vardy (41’)

Full-time thoughts (a short thread).

Rodgers played a transitional system today, with a 3-4-1-2 in defensive phases and seemingly a 4-2-3-1 in attack.

The 4-2-3-1 facilitated a dissection of Brighton’s unit - particularly with positional rotations when shifting between the defensive formation.

The 3-4-1-2 is better at matching Brighton’s shape when pressing.

Pérez/Vardy on the CB’s, the wing-backs pushed onto Burn/Veltman - and we matched their mobile CM’s because of the added mobility through Ndidi.

Very few passing lanes available for Brighton.

A lot of credit has gone to the shift from Rodgers, with Justin/Albrighton switching wings.

Burn struggled with Albrighton’s directness & often tucked centrally (like a CB) when out of possession, giving Justin space to maraud into - with additional pace as well.

The transitional shape also aided the rotational movements from #LCFC.

It created overloads - from Brighton - on the wings, with frequent switches of play utilising the space we created on the opposing flank.

This makes me very happy, this unlocks deep-blocks.

The one touch passing, especially in the final third was intricate.

Encapsulated by Maddison - who was phenomenal tonight. Having clever on-the-ball players (Maddison, Pérez, Tielemans) in the advanced areas is crucial to how Rodgers wants #LCFC to play.

I stated the game vs. Sheff Utd was a difficult one for Maddison, but still had the quality to decide the game.

Today, his quality was indisputable - not even just the goals (which were both excellent); ball retention, bypassing the press, creative.

A perfect #10 performance.
Defensively, the three CB’s understood when to step-up and intercept the ball - this was important as Brighton’s main threat stems from around the corner interplay from their relatively narrow front three.

Stopping this attacking route was pivotal, and successful.

Justin has been exceptional for a few weeks now, even during some of #LCFC’s weaker performances.

Flexible in possession, decisive around the box, quick, good in defensive transitions.

A very well-rounded wing-back, but maybe even better as a wide centre-back.

Pérez’s adaptability as a forward is a massive boost for #LCFC. He was excellent as the #10 vs. Sheff Utd, and showed moments today as the second ST.

Because he can drift positionally, Brighton struggled to mark him - he also combines with Vardy on the defensive line.

I’m one of Mendy’s biggest fans, but undoubtedly, Ndidi’s aerial presence, additional interceptions and tackling numbers, are such a bonus for #LCFC.

His ball-playing was also great today, a lot of the switches of play came from him (a great scanner of options).

#LeiBha
I think a pivot of Tielemans/Ndidi is tactically flexible and balanced.

They dictated the tempo, worked tirelessly out of possession, but also recycled play efficiently.

They’re key components in the shift between the formations (3-4-1-2 & 4-2-3-1).

Having a left-footed LCB (Fuchs) is inherently beneficial to buildup play.

Quite a few opportunities fell to Fuchs to progress play - but had to be played quickly on his left - if that’s his weaker side, it’s a lot more difficult.

Exceptional technical ability.

A very, very enjoyable watch.

I also like the game-management, “professional” second-half - rather than allowing Brighton back into the game. We still created, but limited their creation (to essentially nothing).

Next up, Everton.
