It’s December & it’s been a YEAR, not just because of the tumultuous nightmare train of 2020, but also because Bodacious has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months, exceeding my wildest expectations.
I started thinking about what I’ve learned from it all & what might be useful to share, so I’ve put together my key 2020 lessons below
Some are obvious, some less so, but these are all things I've come to realise or that have been cemented as of value in my mind
Hope it helps

1. Liquidity is leverage
When you run your own business (or even if you don’t), you need cash on tap to ride out tough times. Try to save 6 mos worth of cash in case shit goes down (*cough* pandemic)
It’ll give you peace of mind & buys you time to think & make smarter choices

2. Self-promotion is key
We live in an era when you can platform yourself & build your own community
Many think it's arrogant or reeks of snake oil salesmen, but it depends how you use it
When done well, it's powerful new biz tool; people find you, not the other way around

3. Navigate your network
Always be networking, even when busy
Find interesting ppl, ask for 20mins, figure out 5 Q's, ensuring the last one is always ‘is there anyone else you’d recco I speak to?’
These connections are gold dust & will sustain you throughout your career

4. Talk, write, share
If you’re interested in something – write about it, share stuff on it, offer to do a presentation about it
My talk on Fandoms landed me my NBA contract, after they saw it published on my substack
If you don’t speak up, relevant people can’t find you

5. Be a voracious learner
Pick a topic that sparks your imagination & let yourself fall down a rabbit hole
You’ll discover new nuggets & patterns, leading you somewhere entirely new & fascinating
If you don’t get lost once in a while, how do you know what you might be missing?

6. Generosity pays dividends
Help people. Do favours. Give your time.
I have never once regretted this & I continue to do it at every opportunity I get
Not only is giving someone else a helping hand a wonderful feeling, but that karma will come back to you ten-fold. Trust me

7. Stop the doubt
Don’t play small
Often we get scared of saying yes to things or putting ourselves forward for projects that feel a bit too big or outside of our wheelhouse
Don’t
Just go for it, learn as you go, don’t let the idea of not being perfect hold you back, crack on

8. Learn to let go
When we level-up, it often means we have to leave people, projects & places behind
That can be tough, but it’s necessary, as we grow, we evolve in different directions
Release what you’ve outgrown with grace and gratitude, then spread your wings.

9. Ask for help
If you’re ever struggling, say so
When you ask for help, that’s a power move, not an admission of defeat
There are so many out there who will gladly support you & who can help to steer you, you need only send a Dm or ask for an intro
It’s always a good idea
