Like seriously, this is such a gigantic killer of a problem that North America is completely failing at regulating
I mean “killer” literally. Fossil fueled killer machines.
In airline industries, there’s a concept called “tombstone technology.” Every time someone dies or there’s an attack, there’s huge changes in tech and rules.
It’s mind boggling that we don’t do the same for cars.

Like EVs are fine, really, but I don’t think adoption rate of them is making up for the problem of cars getting bigger and bigger every year. Dunno, would be happy to be proven otherwise.
I’m not an expert so I don’t know what the most equitable or efficient regulatory package is that would solve this problem. But what I do know is that we’re not doing nearly enough to even acknowledge the problem.
The airline industry hates being reactive, they’d much rather be proactive and not wait until there’s deaths to make changes.
The car industry doesn’t even clear that low, low bar of “reactive”. It’s completely nonresponsive to mass killings. It’s abysmal.

This is what I mean when I talk about car supremacy and car culture. We blame individuals for the killing, not the car infrastructure or environment or the sociopolitical context that enabled this tragedy. So many maimed, so many dead. And the car industry turns a blind eye.
(I’ll note that the airline industry is only reactive because airline deaths get huge press, lower ticket sales, and severely impact their bottom line. It’s not like they’re better people in that industry. Car killings just don’t affect car sales.)
I wonder if fines to the car company every time a pedestrian or cyclist is maimed or killed would help? Make them pay for insurance? I don’t know, but I should really read more on this, I’m sure tons of research is already out there - any recommendations?
Ah ofc my friend with a brilliant mind Brendan Vance has already written about it https://4xisblack.neocities.org/posts/2020-12-07-P-Equals-M-V.html?fbclid=IwAR32KO0N7St1WtQymmfwL57JI4O9SE6XsGCte1AlGNQOtxgBTAfE6NMjyPo
