There were no Christmas lights, Santas, pine trees or toys at the first Christmas. There was only Jesus, born in a manger in a foreign land b/c his parents were poor refugees fleeing the persecution of a tyrannical king. You don’t need more than the scripture to teach your kids. https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1338214103307997195
Again, this idea of reducing Christ to the practices of white capitalism & western colonialist inventions is not biblical at all. It’s part of a white supremacist theology which borrows elements from Christianity but doesn’t actually align with the scriptures or teachings.
I’ve tweeted about this before & there’s a lot of writing on the subject you can read yourself. But it’s important to recognize that white supremacy is a theology as much as it is a political ideology. The false idea Christmas is under attack is about maintaining white hegemony.
White supremacist theology informs the practices of white settler colonialism, even among those who don’t identify as Christians. It’s rooted in a belief that white rule is natural, ordained by God & the universe & that nonwhite ppl are lesser beings.
White supremacist ideology was not a part of any Christian practice in the earliest days of Christianity. That’s a phenomenon that developed over time in Europe, primarily rooted in anti-Semitism & then was exported to the rest of the world in the age of European colonialism.
Symbols & icons of early Christianity were co-opted & adapted to support the development of white supremacist theology, primarily the idea that Jesus & God are “white” & that anyone who isn’t a “white” European Christian is some form of heathen or inherently inferior being.
The annual ritual of pretending the Christmas holiday is somehow under attack when it remains unquestionably the dominant holiday of the season—celebrated by people who don’t even necessarily identify as Christian—is really about the fear of losing white cultural dominance.
