I see y'all are ready to write pieces about Charley Pride & that's awesome. However, I keep seeing these colorblind, "we didn't see him as Black" sentiments. I can't speak for Mr. Pride but I can speak for myself when I say that if you write about me and ignore or (Thread 1 of 4)
pretend I am not black, you are basically ignoring my humanity. Who I am. It's offensive and silly. I am a lot of things, one of them is a proud black woman. It colors (pun intended) my experiences, the way I see the world, and the way the world sees me. Being black is LIT. (2)
Seeing my color isn't the issue. It's what YOU see when YOU see my color that's the issue. No, he wasn't a Black Country singer. He was a phenomenal, groundbreaking, and important to the genre Country Singer AND a Black man. All of those things are awesome. Acknowledge them. (3)
And ask yourself why you have a hard time saying it... (4)
...and p.s. the reason he worked so hard to be great is because we (black people) have ALL been told since the day we were born that we have to be twice as good as everyone else. That's the burden. When you write about him, think of his greatness in that context...
Last thought: it's White Supremacy and racism that implies that being black and being "country" can't exist at the same time. Reprogram your thinking, EVERYBODY. Black AND white people.
