I’ve noticed that there’re spooks possessing VTubers and fans. It reminds me of AniTwitter (for obvious reasons) and I’m old enough to have seen discourse repeat itself

Let’s open up this can of worms up and do some spook busting.

“What makes a VTuber a VTuber”?

[Thread]
I bring this up because of constant waves of harassment from what I assume are “apolitical” transphobes, misogynists, racists, etc. I also posited lately a hunch that a secret ingredient to nerdy aggression online (be they gamers, weebs, etc) is the need to control their hobby
The need to control what their hobbies mean to them since that consumer identity is all they have to their selves. It’s what defines them, possesses them. Naturally, they will be defensive when their defining features and self-interest to maintain a status quo are challenged
I do not fear the possessed nor do I pity them. I just don’t want to be around them or associated with them

They cling to this control and are in constant need to reaffirm how they define their hobbies and justify to their circlejerks; thus, needing to define VTubers now
They view VTubers as another type of product to control and define to their circles just like the Waifu Wars of ol’. To continue this consumption and regurgitate us back out to consume again like they do with anime and games—easily discardable and valueless outside of control
I’d wager that the weeb’s ineptitude is the thorn in their side that they refuse to come to terms with. Escapism is like a drug—constantly distracting themselves and lashing out towards those who do not conform to their fantasies and ideals of how they define their property
It was interesting (albeit annoying) to be harassed last week by such people who commonly said to me and others: “Who asked for your opinion? You haven’t even debuted yet” or just regular misogyny, racism and transphobia to try to dehumanize us to “cancel” us
This new focus is interesting for the same reason they cling to hobbies. The kind of VTubers these people like all conform and cater to some degree their ideals, norms, fantasies and fetishes. It is even better if the VTuber is to a degree inauthentic and has a manufactured image
When we try to tell them and plea to them to remember that there are people behind the Live2D, that fact is conveniently discarded to return to their sick, immersive fantasies. It is easy to grow if you cater to this rather than aim for authenticity and community
What’s ironic about their idea of “community” is brief discussion and shared consumption of things, occasionally banding together to beat down on the perceived “out-group”

This is why they will never understand what communities actually are. It requires one to not be anti-social
The possessed prefer spectacle and representation of things than do the work it takes to engage with the real things that they deeply desire. This is why reason or compromise will never work. They are not coming from a place of sound judgement or reason whatsoever
This is why consumers of VTubers, the weebs and gamers, define VTubers the way they do; which in turn, affects many VTuber’s perceptions of themselves and what their aspirations ought to be.

This is a conflict of maintaining the self versus becoming a commodity
This is concerning as you can tell now that I’ve laid it all out

There are many reasons why one creates content. Maybe it’s for self-expression. Maybe it’s for fun as a hobby, maybe it’s for getting by, maybe it’s a dream to be an anime character finally with new tech
How I define what occurs when one becomes a VTuber is summed up as one making an alter ego of themselves to represent themselves to their world—a means of expression very similar to furries. One can also manufacture a brand to play as like one would do as an actor
In other words, the consumer desires a ready-to-go product to consume. The average creator wants to express themselves. The question of “what makes a VTuber” ultimately is useless because you are defining creative self-expression and an extension of a person’s being for display
The question is not “What is a VTuber”, but truly is a slew of questions, “Who are you? What are your goals? How do you want to present yourself? Are you happy with how you are presenting yourself?”

Only you can define you. Consumers can never do this, not really
This one has the right idea I was getting to! What compromise is there to give if you cannot be yourself on your own time own time, money and energy to create the content you want?

What does popularity, appeasement to consumers, etc have anything to do with who you are? Nada. https://twitter.com/clipsey5/status/1338211258387017730
You are not Hololive. You are not your favorite content creator. You are not what a bunch of weebs try to tell you who you really or where you ought to belong

Remember this going forward and free yourself and others from this mental cage.
