This week I was added to a Twitter list of people NOT to follow bc I'm a @SFWA member, so now seems as good a time as any to tweet about why I continue to support this organization and all the ways they've helped me over the past 6 years that I've been a member.
Writers Beware! The amazing @victoriastrauss warns about publishing and marketing scams that specifically target writers. I firmly believe that publishing is a safer place because Writers Beware exists. #SFWA

I've contacted Writers Beware twice in my 6 years as a member: once to check if an opportunity I was offered was legit, and once when I had privacy concerns about a market I'd submitted to and what they were doing with my information. #SFWA
Emergency Medical Fund. It's one of those #SFWA resources I hope I never need to use but am so glad that it is there for writers who do have unexpected medical expenses come up that are not covered by insurance. https://www.sfwa.org/about/benevolent-funds/emergency-medical-fund/
Mentorship initiative! I've been both a mentor and a mentee through #SFWA's mentorship program, and both times found it to be a great way to connect with other SFF writers, learn from their experiences, and support one another. https://www.sfwa.org/other-resources/for-authors/mentoring-initiative/
Contracts committee. Reading through the #SFWA contracts committee's sample contracts taught me SO MUCH about what to look for in publishing contracts at a time when I admittedly had no idea what I was doing. https://www.sfwa.org/member-links/committees/contracts-committee/
GriefCom. Fortunately, I've only had to contact the #SFWA Grievance Committee once to help me get paid when a short story publisher seemed to be ignoring my own attempts at contact, but it's good to know that they're there to help and advocate for you! https://www.sfwa.org/member-links/committees/griefcom/
New release newsletter, featured author slot, BookBub opportunities. These #SFWA promotional opportunities and more were a helpful boost when promoting my small press-published Place in Time series.
Nebula awards! Being able to nominate & vote for the Nebulas was one of my initial reasons for wanting to join #SFWA. The reading list is a great resource for finding great reads throughout the year -- way more than I'd ever have the time to actually complete!
There are many, many other reasons SFF writers join and remain a part of #SFWA. These are just a few of mine.
I have a huge appreciation for everyone who volunteers their time to this organization. Thank you for all that you do!

FYI - I removed myself from the list by blocking the user, but anyone interested in a legit list of #SFWA authors to follow can find one here:
