All signs point to Biden being confirmed as President. This is cause for celebration, but lets take a moment to push back against a simple narrative of an anti-democratic putsch failing against strong institutions.
It's not that black and white. 1/
In the aftermath of a pretty routine election where Biden won more convincingly than Trump did in 2016 we have:
*a majority of GOP supporters say they do not trust the outcomes
*the majority of the GOP House Congressional delegation and 18 AGs proposed overturning the election 2
*Courts pushed back against fairily bizarre claims, but in some cases (MI and WI) decisions were 4-3, suggesting more openness to those claims than we would like
*significant and routine disinformation from Fox and other media platforms that people trust 3/
The effort to overturn an election came from a party that has been routinely engaged in voter suppression, and will use the 2020 election as an excuse to further do so.
Anti-democratic norms have become increasingly mainstream. This bodes ill for the future. 4/
We did not see mass violence at the polls or in protests after, which is a very good thing. We did see militia groups plot to kidnap a Governor, and groups like the Proud Boys mobilizing to protest a free and fair election, accompanied with threats of violence. 5/
I feel like there has been more pushback against people seeking a terminology to make sense of a real concern about democracy (don't use coup! or fascism!) than engagement with useful frames like democratic backsliding and competitive authoritarianism 6/ https://twitter.com/mcopelov/status/1336691021741252608?s=20
All of this is to say that while the low-probability outcome did not occur, we did face a stress test for US democracy, the result of which should make you less rather than more confident about the future. 7/
